Welcome to our Year 6 class page!

Year 6 class teacher:
Ms Sowerby

Designated safeguarding: Mrs Martin

Deputy safeguarding lead: Mr Shelton and Mrs Nadolny

I would like to welcome you all back to school ready for another busy academic year. I hope that you have had a peaceful, restful, and enjoyable summer, and feel refreshed for new challenges ahead. This year is one of the most important as all their learning at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Primary School is focused on their SATs in the summer. This year will be both challenging and rewarding as they hone their skills ready for the adventure that is High school.

In Year 6, they will produce extended writes across numerous genres and in this half term they will link to our class novels. The students will use all their skills from Year 1 all the way to Year 6 to create their final pieces that showcase all their skills.

In Maths, children will focus on place value and the main calculation methods needed in Year 6. They will solve problems involved in everyday life, including money, weight, capacity, and volume.

In Science, the students will be revisiting electrical circuits, learning how to draw conventional circuit diagrams and use models to explain current, resistance and voltage. The class will apply their knowledge of switches and electrical circuits to design and produce their own practical devices.

Year 6 will be focusing on the Tudors in History, and we will be welcoming Catherine from History to Life into school as we experience what life was life in Tudor times. Our art and design project will concentrate on designs and creating an item of clothing that would have been worn in Tudor times.

The tales have been retold using accessible language and with the help of Tony Ross’s engaging black-and-white illustrations, each play is vividly brought to life allowing these culturally enriching stories.

It will be a very busy but equally enjoyable half term for the children, and I am sure that they will rise to the challenges set before them.

Ms Sowerby and Mrs Wright

Year 6 Visit to the Wheatley Youth Centre youth hub

Last week, some of our Year 6 children were invited to attend the opening of the Wheatley Youth Hub It was a wonderful opportunity for them to be part of an exciting new development in the local community.

A youth centre is a safe, welcoming space where young people can meet friends, take part in fun activities, learn new skills and access support and guidance. Youth centres help young people build confidence, develop positive relationships, explore their interests and feel connected to their community.

We are delighted that our Year 6 children had the opportunity to attend this special occasion and learn more about a valuable resource that can support young people as they grow and develop.

Thank you to everyone involved in making this opportunity possible! 🌟
