Here at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Primary School, our Early Years Foundation Stage consists of our Reception class, this is for children who are school age (four-five).
Our Approach to Learning in Early Years
The Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum (EYFS) is a play-based curriculum. This is something at OLMC we are very passionate about. We love to join in play with children, through play we scaffold development meaning we build upon children’s learning whilst they are engaged and enjoying play. Our approach is Objective Led. This approach means that we have learning objectives for each session, we play with the children and discreetly direct play to these objectives. This means that children learn in a fun, practical way which is meaningful and led by their individual interests.
There are seven areas of the EYFS Curriculum, see these below.
7 Areas of Learning
- Communication and Language
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development
- Physical development
- Literacy
- Mathematics
- Understanding the world
- Expressive arts and design
You can find out more about Early Years in this helpful document for parents… What-to-expect-in-the-EYFS-complete-FINAL-16.09-compressed.pdf (foundationyears.org.uk)
You can find out more information about learning in each class by looking on the Reception class page. Here you will be able to find out about what the curriculum will look like.

This Mental Health Awareness Week is all about celebrating our communities and how they support our mental health. 💜
For many of us, community is found in online spaces, where we connect with others over hobbies and interests, shared identities and experiences. 📱💻
But not all communities are good for us. And sometimes, online communities can do more harm than good, particularly for young people.
During the week, we’ll be championing positive communities, while raising awareness of the risks of harmful spaces – particularly online. On Wednesday, we’ll be taking our campaign to parliament, where we’ll call on the government for urgent reform to better protect young people’s mental health in online spaces through regulations and education.

We would like to welcome the new leader of the Catholic Church Pope Leo XIV.
Faithful God,
You guide us on the path of life
and your goodness is our constant companion.
Be with our new Shepherd, Pope Leo XIV,
in his service of the Church.
Fill him with the power of your Spirit,
the peace of your presence
and the compassion of Christ.
May he walk with you,
in wisdom and humility,
and lead us, together with all God’s people,
to embody your love for the world.
Amen. ... See MoreSee Less
