Intent

We want Art to be a subject that offers our children the freedom to express themselves in a way that gives them enjoyment and personal fulfilment. We want children to have exposure to art (a variety of skills and experience of using them). We want to see progression; a developing knowledge of artists but above all enjoyment. Progression booklets have been produced to enable children and staff to plan their curriculum with progression in mind. They will be used to recap prior learning, explain the new learning, and give an insight into where this learning will take them periodically. We would like children to leave with the understanding that it’s never wrong – it doesn’t have to be a certain way. We want them to be able to express themselves creatively both as children and in the future.

Implementation

The skeleton of our art curriculum is the national curriculum. The progression of Art is designed to enable cross-curricular teaching and learning in all year groups. For example, sketching and painting are taught as basic skills linked to an artist. These skills have then been practised, applied, linking to the year group topic. Progression booklets will be shared with the children at the beginning of their lesson to enable them to revisit their prior learning, be confident articulating their new learning and see where their learning will take them as they move through school. This will develop a knowledge of the purpose of their learning and where they sit upon their journey. We are confident that consistency of this approach is strong with teachers working collaboratively and planning art elements as a team.

Impact

We ensure the children develop the creative, technical and practical expertise in Art and Design; build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and create an artistic piece; understand and appreciate the work of a variety of artists.
We measure the impact of our curriculum and the progression of pupils through the following:

  • a celebration of learning for each year group, displayed in school, which demonstrates progression across the school.
  • pupils discussion about their learning.

Year 6 Visit to the Wheatley Youth Centre youth hub

Last week, some of our Year 6 children were invited to attend the opening of the Wheatley Youth Hub It was a wonderful opportunity for them to be part of an exciting new development in the local community.

A youth centre is a safe, welcoming space where young people can meet friends, take part in fun activities, learn new skills and access support and guidance. Youth centres help young people build confidence, develop positive relationships, explore their interests and feel connected to their community.

We are delighted that our Year 6 children had the opportunity to attend this special occasion and learn more about a valuable resource that can support young people as they grow and develop.

Thank you to everyone involved in making this opportunity possible! 🌟
